What do we do?
The Carlmont Statistics Club is a club that helps students gain a better understanding of statistics through the practical applications of the subject. In this club, students learn important skills that allow them to utilize statistics as a tool to analyze data.
In this club, students:
Learn how to gather data and analyze data
Conduct school surveys
Plan and execute projects
Upload club projects onto a club website
Perform statistics-related volunteer work
Participate in statistics competitions
The Carlmont Statistics Club performs three main tasks:
1) Information Gathering
Students choose topics of interest, from broad themes like election outcomes and marketing to specific ones like animal shelter adoption rates and associated determinants, and gather data. The students obtain data from public domains and conduct research using the wide range of data formats that are available online. This information gathering exposes students to real-life examples of how one can use statistics and how the results can be effectively presented.
2) Projects
As students become more familiar with statistics, they divide into groups, each led by a group leader. They plan projects based on the information gathered from the data. The students then analyze the data based on their goals for each project. During this process, students learn how to use statistical tools like Kaggle and Tableau, which are important in a variety of their future careers. After completing their project, each group posts the results on this website for public use.
3) Surveys
The Carlmont Statistics Club also creates surveys and gathers responses from Carlmont students to offer feedback to Carlmont High School (e.g., what is the most wanted change at school, the level of confidence and satisfaction among students, and so on).
